New York-born saxophonist and composer Lakecia Benjamin combines traditional jazz with modern styles such as hip hop, funk, soul, and R&B. She received her education at the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts and The New School University. She has collaborated with artists including Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, Missy Elliot, Gregory Porter, and The Roots.
On January 20, 2009, she performed at the inauguration of Barack Obama. Her most famous and personal album to date, Phoenix, was released in 2023. The impetus for this album was a severe car accident she was involved in in 2021. Phoenix revolves around her recovery and rebirth. This album earned her multiple Grammy nominations.
